My mom and dad bought our camp on the beautiful Lake Meddybemps Maine in 1946. They bought the stock (within the country in Down East Maine called) from "Donkey" Smith of Calais. It 'was just our camp, and Tommy Reynolds near Denyer's Cottage Beach. Dad painted our place, "Red", so then we were known as "red field" near the beach. Cliff Reynolds in possession of the beach, but our beach with the family was right. Mr. Reynolds also owned the fields on our right, and he had rented during allin summer. Cliff had to rent an entire company to his camp with the beach and boats. He started a place for people, tent and camping completely in its area facing the beach, with a hand pump to draw water and a snack bar and a place to boot. I used to dive in front of our pier is growing before our red camp, and I would swim diagonally to the beach raft. It was usually the floating crowded, especially on a hot summer day. It 'was fun, a childthose days. Father worked in a document (St.Croix Paper Co) at "Woodland" in Baileyville, Maine. My favorite shop was the Western Auto hardware and Todd, but was a 5 and 10, WT Grant, Woolworth, Fishman, Bernardini Peanuts (peanuts were very warm and cashews, which were anointed inbrown bag), Down East TV and a few other places we like to go. The peanuts were so good, but limited, all the way back to camp. We ate. Sometimes Mom Dad took me and my sisters, the St. Croix Valley Drive-In Theatre. I always remember a circular green burning wick on a car dashboard. There were so many mosquitoes and black flies.
In those days was the speakers on a pole. The showcased. This was before you could tune to a specific frequencythe radio. A couple of times we went to the movies in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, at the Queen Theatre. The Canadian border is about 16 miles from our camp. burned by the State Theater Calais was without a cinema. The last film was played there, "A Hot Tin Roof." How ironic. It 'been a good life, when life was simple. We had the majority of companies throughout the summer as Cliff's Land has many friends to play with. Meddybemps Lake drew many people from Maine and other eastern states. The lake is big enough, eight miles long and 7 km wide with fifty-two Islands. Some of the boats on the lake, are designed to use the most ocean, I thought.
Meddybemps was in deep parts, but was also known for its many rocks. There were quite a few boats and engines were damaged in that body of water. I learned quickly where most of the rocks were.Many of these bolders just below the surface were marked with paint or buoys, but sometimes a bit ', we noticed that some were overlooked. I managed a couple of pins or two over the years, cutting and had to fix the outboard motor several times. I also remember the seaplanes land on the lake, and sometimes we got a ride on the lake would take. Ketchum and had a plan and so did Ed Arbo. Of course, then the fish and game warden, so we make sure we had ourLicense with us, and measure the length of our catch. Dad likes to go fishing after work and we usually fried fish two or three nights a week. We fry, oven and grill them.
